Abstract:

The next, tenth volume of “Memorabilia Zoologica” presents the correspondence from 1925 to 1948 between professors Witold Ziembicki and Janusz Domaniewski. Professor Ziembicki was a physician, internist, academic teacher, historian of medicine, editor of several magazines, publicist, social activist, naturalist, hunter, bibliophile, bibliographer of many famous figures. Professor Domaniewski, on the other hand, was above all a naturalist fascinated by ornithology, a scientist developing nature conservation and natural history museums in Poland. Their shared passion for hunting brought them together and fueled their extensive correspondence over the years. The topics of the letters are quite diverse and concern, among others, the organizational system of Polish hunting and legislation in this field. This is particularly significant, as, following Poland's independence in 1918, new legal and organizational frameworks for the activities of Polish hunters were created and both authors of the letters took an active part in this process. Another key aspect of their discussions was nature observations, data collection, including the use of surveys, which aimed to support game monitoring. Both professors were authors of numerous hunting articles published in periodicals for hunters. The exchange of opinions between them regarding the need to take up a selected topic and develop it shows a constant desire to raise the substantive level and care for developing knowledge of nature within the hunting elite.
