Abstrakt:

Prezentowany w artykule przypadek żydowskiej imigrantki z Rumunii przybyłej do USA w 1916 r. ukazuje sposób traktowania osób z niepełnosprawnościami umysłowymi chcących pozostać w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Oceniana poprzez pryzmat przydatności społecznej na podstawie eugenicznie określonych kryteriów Fanny Berkovic miała być deportowana do kraju pochodzenia ze względu na możliwość obciążenia swym pobytem amerykańskiej służby zdrowia, niewielką przydatność społeczną i ekonomiczną oraz prawdopodobieństwo pozostawienia potomstwa w podobnym do jej stanie zdrowia. Artykuł pokazuje, dlaczego i jak poprzez kryteria medyczne definiowano użyteczność imigrantów, jakie zagrożenia w nich widziano i dlaczego ich deportacja rozumiana była jako wzmocnienie narażonej na osłabienie tkanki społecznej USA budującej Amerykę.
