Odpowiedzi na pytanie zawarte w tytule szukano na drodze eksperymentalnej. Zbadano 4 gatunki ssaków-jeża (Erinaceus europaeus), świstaka amerykańskiego (Marmota monax), popielicę (Glis glis) i żołędnicę (Eliomys quercinus). Jeż, świstak i żołędnica są zdolne do hibernacji w ciągu 48 godzin po przeniesieniu ich z ciepłego pomieszczenia do chłodnego.
