W Albercie (Kanada) Arvicola richardsoni (DeKay, 1842) zamieszkuje tylko środowiska umiarkowanie wilgotne położone wzdłuż okresowo czynnych cieków na wysokości 2000 do 2200 m npm w Rocky Mountain (Ryc. 1, 2). Taka ścisła specjalizacja środowiskowa określa zarówno rozmieszczenie jak i wielkość populacji miejscowych a także dyspersję w tych populacjach. W dwu miejscach, w których populacje były badane, złowiono także 6 innych gatunków gryzoni, przy czym wszystkie z nich mają znacznie szerszy zasięg geograficzny niż A. richardsoni.
