Dane paleontologiczne wskazują, że bobry zamieszkują Finlandię od 6500-7000 lat. Intensywne łowienie tych zwierząt spowodowało, że ostatni osobnik został zabity w północnej Finlandii w 1868 r. Dopiero w latach 1935-36 przywieziono 19 bobrów europejskich z Norwegii, a w 1937 7 bobrów kanadyjskich ze stanu New Jork. Ten drugi gatunek szybko zwiększał swą liczebność tak, że od 1945 roku można było go przewozić w inne regiony kraju.
