Przeanalizowano występowanie szwowych i ciemiączkowych kostek Worma u 6564 okazów, należących do 28 gatunków i 5 rzędów ssaków. Kostki Worma stwierdzono tylko u niektórych gatunków. Przypuszczalnie jest to związane z morfofunkcjonalnymi właściwościami czaszki oraz wcześniejszym lub późniejszym w rozwoju ontogenetycznym kostnieniem ciemiączek i szwów.
