Alveoli surrounded by morphologically and functionally differentiated epithelia are the proper respiratory part of the lung. The alveolar septa are formed from a network of capillaries with endothelium lining the walls and from sparse connective tissue elements, represented by collagen and elastin fibers, as well as single fibroblasts, observed at the base of type II epithelial cells and at capillary bifurcations (images 1-6).
