Three groups of experiments were performed to prove whether the clinical symptoms of acute pancreatitis could be related to the toxic effect of circulating pancreatic enzymes. In the first group the dogs were given intravenously increasing amounts of pancreatic juice. In the second aud third groups the pancreatic juice was circulating in the blood after * being excreted through an operatively made pancreatico-venous fistula. The authors state that the pancreatic enzymes circulating in the blood produce a toxic effect, namely disturbances in the blood coagulation, hypoproteinemia and kidney function disorders. " . Similar changes in the blood coagulation were observed in patients with acute pancreatitis
