A case of the infantile form of amaurotic idiocy is presented. The case showed the typical clinical picture and course. Specific ophthalmological lesions were present. Pathologic examination of the brain showed the typical morphology of this form of the disease. The relatively slight damage to the cerebellum was the only pathologic peculiarity of the case. Histochemical examination revealed that the materiał stored in the neuronal cytoplasm was a mixture of lipid compounds. Neuraminic acid—free glycolipid were the principal substances stored, and were not bound with cellular protein. The retinal ganglion cells were filled with similar lipid substances. However, their histo¬chemical properties were similar to those typical for the late infantile form of the disease.
