Abstract:
Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia.Autopsy examination of 70-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson. A focus of old encephalomalacia penetrating from the cortex deep into the white matter was found in the occipital region. It formed numerous post-malacic lacunae with a fine connective tissue stroma. In the frontal area in the white matter and ganglia there was an extensive fresh focus of diffuse reactionless necrosis and spongiosis. In the ganglia and white matter, multiple periarteriolar lacunae and niches formed by stagnant veins were seen.
