Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia recens et inveterata. Arteriosolerosis cerebri. Putrefactio.Autopsy examination of 54-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson. A fresh foci of malacia involving the striatum and partially the white matter was seen in the left hemisphere. The focus was locally in the phase of leukocyte infiltration. Thinning and fissures (putrefaction) were seen in sections of the tissue. In the right hemisphere, in the striatum and white matter, an old focus of malacia was found in the form of a cavity with residual tissue and glial-mesodermal organization in the periphery. All nerve cells were altered; however, interpretation of cellular changes was difficult due to decay; ischemic changes or fatty degeneration were likely. Within the cortex, there was obliteration of the layered structure. The vessels showed vitreous and fibrous changes. Lymphocyte-like cells and leukocytes were found perivascularly, some vessels were filled with embolic material.
