Abstract:The spectral decomposition of the fourth-rank compliance tensor of an elastic solid with an axis of symmetry of infinite order was given, and the characteristic values (eigenvalues) of the same tensor were calculated in terms of its Cartesian components. Energy-orthogonal stress states for the transversely isotropic solid were explicitly calculated and the elastic energy associated with these stress tensors was given a special identification with dilatational or distortional strain energy density. Bounds on the values of Poisson’s ratios of the transversely isotropic solid were established by imposing the eigenvalues of the compliance tensor to be strictly positive.
