Abstract:The article investigates the phenomenon of Western materialism in Soviet society during the period called “Perestroika” (meaning: reconstruction). The legal arrangements for the acquisition of imported consumer goods are analysed. The author concludes that the turnover in the secondary market (consignment trade) was not high. The shops selling the currency and the currency certificates were the embodiment of the myth about the Western abundance, but they often served as a source of replenishment of empty shelves of usual retail. Cooperative and state trading system during the analysed period became the main channel of the acquisition by citizens of goods of foreign manufacture. The imported consumer goods, an element of the concept of “prestige” of consumption in the Soviet Union, were a self-valuable in themselves, regardless of their consumer qualities.
