Abstract:

The article synthetically presents the most important mechanisms of Russian imperial policy towards the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from Peter I to Anna Ivanovna (1697–1740). They were then classifi ed in terms of subject matter and the most important turning points of Russian policy toward Poland in the period were identified. Attention is drawn to the role of Russiaʼs early recognition of the essence of the Commonwealthʼs weakness at the outbreak of the Great Northern War (1700–1721), and the subsequent conscious deepening of this weakness by successive tsars.
