Abstract:
In the article, the author presents cases where historians have analysed the effects of the nationality policy of the Russian Empire. The historical studies discussed are grouped according to how the researchers assessed the results of this policy: the tsarist authorities gave support to one or another ethnic group, as a result of which they succeeded in creating a national movement (a case similar to ʻpositive influenceʼ in the Soviet period); success stories where the tsarist nationality policy signifi cantly delayed the start of a national movement or reduced its chances of gaining mass support and subsequently establishing a nation-state; the effects were the opposite of those expected by the authorities.
