Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Encephalitis lymphocytaria probabiliter parainfectiosa.Autopsy examination of 5-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain frozen sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and cresyl-violet method. There was diffuse glial thickening in the white matter of the hemispheres and in the basal ganglia. In the white matter of the frontal and central gyri, in the basal ganglia, and in the occipital region, massive perivascular lymphocytic infiltrates were seen. The gray matter was rather spared. The architecture of cortex and ganglia was normal. Large vascular congestion and stasis were observed in the cerebellum. There were no inflammatory changes in the brainstem, but discrete lymphocytic infiltrates in the meninges. The picture was consistent with acute inflammatory reactions of the central nervous system, without characteristic features, seen in the course of various general infections, mostly of viral nature.
