Są one rezultatem wspólnych prac Zakładu Badania Ssaków PAN, Zakładu Ekologii PAN oraz Zakładu Ewolucjonizmu UJ, prowadzonych w związku z Międzynarodowym Programem Biologicznym w Polsce. Badania prowadzono na terenie Białowieskiego Parku Narodowego, Ojcowskiego Parku Narodowego i Kampinoskiego Parku Narodowego.
