Histological diagnosis: Oedema et hyperaemia cerebri. Arteriosclerosis cerebri
Autopsy examination of 71-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method. The basal ganglia did not show a macroscopically diagnosed focus of malacia. Only features of cerebral congestion and edema were found (marked tissue relaxation, especially perivascular, leading to a spongy state in some areas). The vessels were hypertrophied, vitreous-fibrously altered, around some there were infiltrates of lymphocyte-like cells, macrophages with hemosiderin. In the midbrain at the level of the dorsal junction, a bloody petechiae was seen around a single vessel.
