Abstract:

Histological diagnosis: Encephalopathia senilis status lacunaris et encephalomalaciae trunci. Autopsy examination of 86-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Cresyl violet, Orcein, Heidenhain, Holzer, Bielschowsky, Perdrau’s and Van Gieson's method.Atrophic changes were observed in the cerebral cortex, most severe in the frontal lobe. Areas of softening without neurofibrillary changes were seen. The above changes were accompanied by gliosis. On the other hand, in the stem, a focus of malacia was found on one side of the sternum and in the cerebellar folia. The parenchymal vessels were thin-walled, the basal vessels with slight atheromatous changes, without obvious narrowing of the vessel lumen. There was no macrophage infiltrate, only histiocytic reaction was observed in the meninges of the frontal lobe.
