Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Atrophia corticis cerebri. Status lacunaris incipiens. Arteriosclerosis. Autopsy examination of 75-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Cresyl violet, Orcein, Heidenhain, Holzer, Bielschowsky, Perdrau’s and Van Gieson's method. No focal changes were observed. The cortex was markedly atrophied, the neurons atrophied up to the loss of layered structures. There was less pronounced but also undoubted loss of basal ganglia and brainstem neurons. The vascular changes were selective - in places advanced atherosclerosis was noticed, in places vascular condition was quite good. Extensive fibrous changes were observed in small vessels of the cortex and subcortex.
