Abstract:

The article focuses on an analysis of Jan Matejko Square in Kraków, an area set apart from the historical Kleparz Market Square which for many centuries was the epicentre of urban life of the Kleparz district of Kraków. A decision to divide the medieval market square into two smaller squares changed the character of the area, incorporating it spatially and visually into the city. Its former commercial image was replaced in the nineteenth century by a new, metropolitan and representative one. The article attempts to look critically at the entire architectural and urban complex of Matejko Square. Special emphasis was put on the outline of the square’s spatial evolution, from the time of its municipal charter to the nineteenth-century regulations. The author also reflects on possible models that could have influenced the final shape of the square.
