Date issued/created: Subject and Keywords: Abstract:This paper describes an unusual type of diterpenoids, called cyathins, and presents their structure, biosynthesis and biological activities. These secondary metabolites have been isolated during the last 35 years from mycelia, culture broths and fruiting bodies of several species of mushrooms such as Cyathus helenae, C. striatus, Hericium erinaceum and Sarcodon scabrosus. Cyathane diterpenoids are known to have a potent stimulating effect on Nerve Growth Factor synthesis and can became potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, for instance Alzheimer’s disease. Cyathins also possess anti-imflammatory and antimicrobial activity.
