Date issued/created: Description: Subject and Keywords: Abstract:Professor Wojciech Kaniewski after solid education in his native Poland was engaged for past 30 years in research in the United States. His first assignment was to solve epidemic of hop viruses in US. The program was so successful that he got his next assignment by USDA to work on potato viruses in Pacific NW. While working there, he was contacted by leading biotechnology company Monsanto to try using modern genetic engineering to protect major crops from virus infection. For the first few months he and his team generated tobacco and tomato resistant to several viruses using transgenic coat protein approach. These accomplishments were sufficient enough to be hired for permanent position at Monsanto research center in Chesterfield, MO.
