Abstract:

The studies concerned the activity of nucleoside phosphatases in cellular elementsof the blood-brain interphase in rats subjected to carbon monoxide intoxication. On the light microscopy significant reduction of enzymatic activity in the bloodvessel walls and in cellular elements of the nerve tissue was observed at 20thmin of CO poisoning. This was followed by its increase observed in the periodbetween the end of intoxication and 4th hour of recovery. Normalization of thehistochemical picture was noted 24 and 48 hours following CO poisoning. On electron microscopy level at 20th min of intoxication deposits indicating thesite of enzyme activity were localized in the basal membranes of capillaries aswell as an the cell membranes of perivascular glia, being accumulated in intermembraneousspaces. First hours of the postintoxication period were characterizedby significant reduction of the electron dense deposits in the capillary basalmembranes, their unequal distribution, progressive diminution of their accumulationon the cell membranes of perivascular glia and by their abnormal distributionin neurons and glial cells. At 24th hr following intoxication electron microscopic picture of the enzymatic activity in experimental animals did not show any differences as compared to the control ones. The above presented enzymatic changes in cellular elements of the blood-brain interphase have been considered as abnormalities accompanying the evolution of cytotoxic brain edema occurring in those experimental conditions.
