Abstract:Polymictic lakes have a higher trophic state than dimictic ones, mainly because more nutrients are returned from the bottom sediments to the water. Biomass of phytoplankton (mainly blue-green algae) and of rotifere increase to the highest phosphorus concentrations in polymictic lakes, and reach much higher values than in dimictic ones. Regular changes of 42 indices of lake ecosystem structure and functioning versus their trophic state have been characterized. However, the scatter of values of indices is great, especially in the most hypertrophic lakes, having frequently unexpected characters for so high trophic state.
