Abstract:Poland under Władysław Gomułka was a country that underwent a process of homogenisation and stabilisation. Developed towns, clothes of people in the streets, their abilities and aspirations, were becoming similar. After the period of post-war poverty and the years of Stalinist regime, the citizens of the Polish People’s Republic were able to fulfil themselves in their private lives, delivered from political bondage, and also – at the expense of their significant sacrifices – to improve their standard of living. A phenomenon of domesticity emerged and the appetite for automobiles increased. Internal migrations decreased, and the labour marked was replenished by the post-war population bulge, which was causing economic and social tensions, especially in underinvested regions, but also among the groups of social advancement. Those tensions, together with the increasingly complicated political situation, led to the crisis of the old formula of rule, symbolised by Gomułka, and to the end of the “small stabilisation” period, circa 1968.
