Description:

Photography (scan from a slide). The photo shows a selection of the goat to sacrifice to the male deity Vachchada dada. Sitting elderly man in a red turban, a medium (bhopa) responsible for the ritual. He is observing a goat, which is put in front of him and looking for signs by which they may determine that the animal has been chosen by God. The other men bring in more male goats. Picture was taken during the rite of Vachchada Dada, which takes place in Bhujodi by night. Participants gather around the shrine which lies on the outskirts of the village - men sit on the shrine, singing and playing drums, falling into a trance, dance, and women are sitting on the ground all around. The ritual lasts all night - from dusk to dawn. The ceremony takes place in the month of Maghser Sud, firat Monday
