Description:

Previous studies comparing the digestive capacity of bison (Bison bison) with that of cattle (Bos taurus) indicated that bison may digest low-quality forage to a greater extent than cattle. In a attempt to determine the relationship between digestive ability and whole animal nitrogen budget, we measured urea concentrations in the blood, in the saliva, in the urine, and in the rumen of two gropups of bison; one fed a high-protein diet, the other fed a low-protein diet.
