Subject and Keywords: Abstract:Autopsy examination of 71-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method.The center of the tumor was occupied by a field of thrombotic necrosis. The nearest adjacent layers were partially disintegrated: numerous astrocytic nuclei and abundant macrophages were observed. In the best preserved parts of the tumor, characteristic glial monstrous cells were seen with nuclei arranged peripherally or scattered loosely within a structureless protoplasm. Often a conglomerate of hyperchromatic nuclei was visible within such a cell. In addition to these cells, mast cell astrocytes and spindle-shaped cells were found. Mitoses were quite frequent; the vascular stroma was abundant, the vessels with hypertrophic walls, intima and appendage proliferation, and thick collagen fiber arrangements were seen. The necrosis in other parts of the brain showed reactionless tissue disintegration in the course of intensive edema.Histological diagnosis: Tumor cerebri. Astrocytoma gigantocellulare malignum.
