Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Atrophia diffusa corticis. Atrophia pigmentaris nuclei dentati, oedema cerebri.Autopsy examination of 63-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain frozen sections stained with cresyl-violet.Diffuse atrophy, partially masked by cellular glial proliferation, was observed in the cortex of all layers and surrounding areas. Glial thickening, indicative of recurrent edema, was seen in the white matter. Perivascular spaces were dilated, often with aggregates of hemosiderin. In the granular layer of the cerebellar cortex, perivascular translucencies were seen. In the nucleus dentatus, cells were thinned, and gross deposits of blackish pigment were seen in the remaining cells; blurred nuclei were pushed to the periphery.
