Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia recens.Autopsy examination of 66-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin.A focus of poorly stained, diffuse tissue with atrophied glial cells was found extending from the semiovale center into the basal ganglia and capsula interna. Cellular reactions were not observed. Giant perivascular lacunae were seen within the putamen, destroying the ganglia almost completely. In the temporal cortex, shrunken cells were observed in edematous /decaying/ cavities. There was prominent hyperplasia of collagen fibers in the vessels, some cortical capillaries were transformed into bundles of thick fibers without lumen.
