Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Focus encephalomalaciae inveteratus putaminis sin. Haemorrhagia pontis.Autopsy examination of 56-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and van Gieson method. The putamen showed an old foci of malacia with well advanced fibroblastic organization filling the post-malacic cyst with the loose network. Few hemosiderin-laden macrophages were visible in the network. Numerous vessels were present, markedly atherosclerotic, with thrombi organizing in the lumen. On 2 specimens in small vessels an accumulation of dark-blue rod-shaped structures was observed, filling the entire lumen (putrefactive bacteria?). The vessels in the vicinity of the focus also showed severely advanced atherosclerotic lesions. Several fresh extravasations with a tendency to cluster into one large focus were found within the pons.
