Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Encephalomalacia recens pontis.Autopsy examination of 70-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, cresyl-violet and van Gieson and brain frozen sections stained with Bielschowsky method.A focus of thinned tissue with a dissolving central portion was seen in the basal part of the pons. Cellular reaction in statu nascendi: single large, foam-like macrophages and stimulated astrocytes were visible. In contrast, no focus was found in the cerebellum - only in one area a thinned granular layer tissue perhaps corresponds to a focus, but does not present any characteristic cellular reactions. At the border of the putamen and striatum, several vessels with pseudo-calcium deposits were visible. The glia in the white matter was mediocrely thickened. Desolations were visible in the cortex. Severely advanced vascular atherosclerosis was found.
