Do XVI wieku bobry były rozprzestrzenione w całej Francji, po czym ilość ich gwałtownie zmalała a ostatnie zwierzęta zachowały się w delcie Rodanu. Od początku bieżącego stulecia poczyniono pewne kroki zabezpieczające i to stało się początkiem ponownego wzrostu ilości bobrów. Z uwagi na gwałtowne zmiany poziomu wody w Rodanie bobry zamieszkują w długich tunelach z wyjściami na różnych poziomach. Bobry zamieszkują też ciche starorzecza i budują tam również tamy.
