Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Phenylketonuria. Autopsy examination of 1-year-old child was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, Cresyl-violet and Heidenhain method.Morphological examination revealed that the brain was small in relation to the child's weight, gyrus were small, and the ventricular system was dilated. Microscopically, a generalized reduction of white matter in relation to the grey structures was very evident, and within it there was marked demyelination, more severe in the cerebral hemispheres, less in the cerebellum. It was accompanied by tissue damage with foci of spongiform necrosis and cell-fibrous gliosis. Grey structures and especially the cerebral cortex also showed significant damage.Histological diagnosis: Phenylketonuria
