Abstract:Histological diagnosis: Status lacunaris et status spongiosus. Atrophia cerebri senilis. Arteroi et arteriosclerosis. Autopsy examination of 84-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with H-E, PAS and Van Gieson's method. The left hemisphere specimens revealed numerous small foci of encephalomalacia with macrophage reaction in the nucleus accumbens and extensive areas of tissue spongiosis including the cortex and white matter. In the cortex, in some places the spongiosis foci were fused and formed a cavity without macrophage reaction. The preserved cortex was markedly desolated. The meninges were thickened and fibrotic. Vessels of larger caliber were characterized by atheromatous plaques and smaller vessels by vitreous changes.
