Abstract:This paper discusses the Polish expression potąd. The author makes a distinction between its anaphoric(endophoric) and deictic (exophoric) uses. The author also distinguishes between two language units: ktośma kogoś/czegoś (genitive) potąd and the pronoun potąd, which replaces a locative expression. The first unitexpresses an excess of objects, causing a speaker’s dissatisfaction. This unit very often coexists with gestures, and the potąd segment is stressed in the phrase. The pronoun can only be used to describe the areanear the speaker, it is rhematic (TRS), and the coexisting noun is in accusative.
