Abstract:

In satisfying its needs Mankind uses the Earth’s physical resources and fossil energy andproduces products that often are recalcitrant to biogradation. Therefore the prodiiction strategiesemployed in agriculture and industry need reconsideration Biotechnology paves the way foroptimising production processes. Molecular breeding strategies can contribute to agriculture.Biotechnology can contribute to developments in the field of renewable energy. Environmentalbiotechnology can be of value in environmental management. Biotechnology thus can contributeto both bio-remediation and making technology in our society more sustainable, it thereforedeserves a place in (higher) education programmes in the environmental sciences field.
