Abstract:

Polyhydroxyalkanoic acids (PHAs) are insoluble in water, thermoplastic, biocompatible andbiodegradable plastics. These poliesters are synthesized by a variety of microorganisms. Pol3miercumulation in bacteria, metabolic pathways of PHA and their significance for living cells arediscussed. Structure and biochemistry of bacterial PHAs, chemical composition and physicalproperties, methods of polymer detection and analysis are described. Polymer production forcommercial use and possible applications of this natural plastic are discussed.
