Abstract:

The largest world forum for cancer research, the 87th Annual Meeting ofAmerican Associationfor Cancer Research, was held in Washington D. C., USA on April 20-24, 1996. This meetingwas dominated by presentations on molecular mechanisms of chemoprevention, signal transduction, cell adhesion, cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, metastasis formation, and gene therapy.Tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes received much less attention than last year. The meetingcelebrated the 25*^^ Anniversary of the National Cancer Act presenting a number of clinicallyoriented discoveries; however, some participants were less optimistic predicting a crisis in cancerresearch. Polish science was represented by a number of researchers mostly working abroad. Some of their achievements are discussed briefly in this report.
