Abstract:This article presents the author’s reflections on space in Budapest in the second half of the nineteenth century. The author focuses on selected details of buildings as well as on the significance and layout of monuments within the urban space (in the vicinity of the squares of Szervita Tér and Gizela Tér, and Franz Josef Tér, today’s Széchenyi Tér), and buildings such as Vajdahunyad Palace at the 1896 exhibition. He is also interested in the history of shaping the areas inside them, giving as an example the waiting hall of Budapest Central Station. The purpose of these analyses is to answer the question what is possible to establish about the images of a nation in the nineteenth century on the basis of these visual sources.
