[Staging of the “Herods”] [An iconographic document]
Date issued/created: Description:The photo depicts a group of men disguised as different characters according to roles ascribed to them in the “Herods” play. In the foreground there are “Death”, “Devil” and “Jew” bent over a book. In front of them there is a heap of sand. In the background there are men dressed as kings, soldiers and other characters. The inscription on the back of the photo says: “26 December 1947. The photo depicts my father – Antoni (...) together with his friends. This was a custom associated with Christmas, the so-called “Herods”. The photo was taken in Konopnica by Jan (...)” ; December, the 27th, 194, Konopnica ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
