[A woman in a regional costume] [An iconographic document]
Date issued/created: Description:The photo depicts a young woman in a regional costume posing outside. According to the photo’s owner, it depicts Anna (…), daughter of Monika and Jan, from a peasant family from Kokoszyce. She is dressed in a traditional Sunday outfit worn at that time by unmarried women from the neighbouring villages of Pszów commune, Rybnik district. This was a long, usually black, skirt with an undecorated apron – if without an apron, than a skirt would be trimmed with 6 white buttons (on the left side). Women also used to wear waistcoats (with or without a cut waistline), fastened at the front in the middle with ornamented buttons with or without clasps, in various patterns. Such a costume was commonly used until 1939. At the back of the photo there is an inscription saying: “Anna (…) 1917 – Kokoszyce – in a visiting dress” [the rest is illegible] ; 1917, Kokoszyce ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
