Description:

The photo depicts four men in workwear and "kufajka" [quilted jackets] standing by a road building machine’s cabin; two of them are holding tools in their hands. There are some buildings in the background. A sign on the front of the machine says: “VOMAG”; another one on the door says: Emil Müllner G.m.b.H (first letter(s) not visible) “-elbert”. According to the photo owner’s account, this is the photo of a road roller. His grandfather (…) worked with it as a roller driver employed by the Wojewódzkie Warsztaty Mechaniczne [The Provincial Mechanical Workshops] in Lviv at Mickiewicza street ; 1937-1938, Lviv-region (Ukraine) ; The photo sent to the contest named “Photography of the Polish village pre-1948” organized in 1983 by the quarterly “Fotografia” (Photography) and the weekly “Nowa Wieś” (New village). Copy of the photo kept at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (former Institute for the History of Material Culture)
