Muscle segment examination in light and electron microscopy

Abstract:

A 56-year-old patient with suspected mitochondrial or metabolic myopathy was examined. A biopsy of biceps sinister was performed. Electronmicroscopy analysis revealed ultrastructurally unchanged muscle fibers of normal myofibrils structure and typical nuclei located under sarcolemma. Numerous fat droplets and lipid structures were observed.Mitochondria characterized be light mitochondrial matrix and partially devoid of mitochondrial cristae were seen. Biochemical evaluation of carnitine palmitoyltransferase in the muscle tissue was performed and the result was 2,62 nM/mgB/min. (Norm 6,5-18 nM/mgB/min.).
