Abstract:The author has endeavoured to demonstrate the effect of a population of D. polymorpha on circulation of matter in a body of water using 8 Mazurian lakes as examples of this (Tab. I). It was found that this inf1uence may vary greatly depending on the abundance and age structure of D. polymorpha and the habitat conditions. In some lakes the D. polymorpha population possesses potential capacity to filter the whole of the water in the epilimnion in a relatively short time from a few to a 1arge number of days (fig. 2) the amounts of their excreta are also large in these lakes (fig. 3). In other lakes the participation of this species in the circulation of matter in the water is slight, due primarily to their small numbers.
