 abstract={Władysław Semkowicz (1878–1949) was the most eminent Polish researcher in the auxiliary sciences of history and the author of the textbook Encyklopedia nauk pomocniczych historii (Encyclopedia of the Auxiliary Sciences of History), defi ning the Polish canon of these disciplines. He organised systematic research, especially into the genealogy of medieval knightly families in Poland and Lithuania, historical geography, the Histori-cal Atlas of Poland, diplomatics, palaeography and modern source editing. He educated numerous researchers in the auxiliary history sciences and made the Department and the Offi ce of the Auxiliary Sciences of History at the Jagiellonian University a research centre.},
