 abstract={The article shows the phenomenon of using rumours and slanders published in the Polish émigré press in the years 1865–1918 as a method of fighting against the competition. It discusses the most frequently appearing accusations, such as lack of competence in managing papers, miscreance, immorality, excessive religiosity, lack of patriotism, or the non-Polish origins of people hired in the editorial offi ces. These accusations, mostly untrue or impossible to verify solely based on mentions and articles in press, constitute a catalogue of fears of a Polish emigrant in the examined period. Although, the effectiveness of defamations and rumours in hurting other publishing houses cannot be easily estimated, the popularity of such type of content in the examined magazines indicates that their publication was profitable.},
