 abstract={Histological diagnosis: Encephalomacia recens et inveterata. Arteriosclerosis. Autopsy examination of 71-year-old patient was performed. Neuropathological evaluation in light microscopy was based on brain paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin-eosin, van Gieson, PAS and Alcian blue.In the left hemisphere, a fresh focus of malacia involving the inferior frontal gyrus, basal ganglia, insula, superior temporal gyrus, lateral temporal-occipital gyrus, and hippocampus was evident. The focus was in the phase of leukocyte infiltration and early macrophage demolition. In the necrotic area, the anatomical pattern was blurred, with decreased pigmentation and reduced number of cellular elements. Foci of incomplete necrosis were found in the ammonal cortex h1 - h3. Ischemic, chronic and steatotic conditions were observed in nerve cells of all areas. Features of edema and congestion were present throughout the CNS: vessels were filled with blood, endothelium was swollen, Virchov-Robin spaces were dilated. The tissue structure was spongy. Fibrous and occasionally vitreous changes were found in the vessel walls. The meninges also showed features of congestion, macrophages and histiocyte-like cells were seen around the vessels.
