The best example of those achievements isthe biotechnology of penicillins. Biosynthetic penicillin production using highlyproductive strains ofPenicillium chrysogeniim is followed by enzymatic hydrolysisof the product using microbial penicillin acylase, the best sources of which arerecombinant strains of Escherichia coli. The resulting 6-aminopenicillanic acid isthe starting material for chemical synthesis of a large number of semisyntheticpenicillins.
